10-year-old Amelia Weaver suffers from a rare and debilitating form of epilepsy, which can leave her with unending bouts of seizures. Amelia’s parents, Josh and Angie, knew they had to find a way to help their child overcome her struggles. When legalization was passed in their home state of Minnesota, the Weavers sought out medical cannabis to aid in their daughter’s battle. The results far surpassed anything the parents’ of the young girl could have hoped for.

It has been nearly a year since Minnesota legalized medical cannabis on July 1, 2015. More than 1,400 patients, 150 of whom are children, have signed up to receive cannabis treatment for conditions like cancer, ALS, and epilepsy. Over 300 patients are using medical cannabis to help tame epileptic seizures, and Amelia Weaver is among the youngest.

Amelia’s story and her improvements since beginning medical cannabis treatment have made her somewhat of a poster child for cannabis patients throughout the state. After using the life-changing herb for less than a year, Amelia has gone from upwards of 30 seizures per day to rarely having one at all.

Having her smile at us and give us eye contact and want to be a part of what we’re doing and not having seizures all day has really been life-changing for Amelia. – Angie Weaver

Josh and Angie Weaver worked tirelessly to ensure their daughter had access to life-saving medical cannabis. There were many struggles and obstacles to overcome. They even chad to choose whether or not to move their family to Colorado where medical cannabis was found easily and in abundance. But the couple never once thought of giving up on their efforts. They knew, despite the political barriers, they had to provide their young daughter with some type of relief.

I definitely found out that while I always want to continue fighting for my daughter that politics is very difficult, and I don’t really have a rose-colored view of politics anymore. – Angie Weaver

Their perseverance and hard work paid off, as Amelia is becoming more and more engaged every day. The Weavers are the true definition of why medical cannabis should be available worldwide – think of the number of lives it could improve globally.
